Oregon Envirothon tests students’ science skills
May 14, 2025Portland, Ore. – More than 170 Oregon high school students from 20 schools across the state tested their knowledge and skills in natural resources and environmental sciences during this year’s Oregon Envirothon competition, held May 2 at The Oregon Garden in Silverton.
A team calling themselves the “Rogue Pack Alpha” from Logos Public Charter School earned the highest overall score, coming in first place in the annual statewide competition for the fourth year in a row. The Rogue Pack Alpha’s win earned them the opportunity to compete in the NCF-Envirothon, an international competition hosted by the National Conservation Foundation that will be held this summer in Alberta, Canada.
The Oregon Envirothon, which is sponsored and organized by OFRI, tests students’ problem-solving abilities in various natural resource-related disciplines, including aquatic, forest and wildlife ecology; soils and land use; and a rotating current issue. This year’s current issue was “Roots and Resiliency: Fostering Forest Stewardship in a Canopy of Change.”
On the day of the competition, small teams of students rotate through a series of stations completing tests that require hands-on activities, such as soil and water testing and wildlife species identification, before reconvening for oral presentations on the current issue topic.
To organize the Oregon Envirothon, OFRI works in cooperation with local conservation districts, natural resource associations, educators and environmental agencies to provide mentorship, training and competition for high school students and their teachers.
